Intertek Provides Solutions for New EuP Requirements

July 02, 2009

Intertek, (www.intertek.com), the leading provider of quality and safety services to a wide range of industries, offers consulting, testing and verification services to assist companies to comply with the Eco Design directive for Energy Using Products (EuP) and its implementing measures. Intertek’s EuP services help producers meet their EuP needs, measurement of energy use to compliance levels, implement eco-design principles, perform Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), evaluate and verify their products against applicable criteria to fulfil the EuP requirements and enable companies to continue their business in the EU market.

The eco-design directive for Energy-using Products 2005/32/EC (EuP) became a European Union law in 2005. The first EuP implementing measure came into effect in January 2009 and will be followed by a series of implementation measures over several years. Regulations covering five product categories have been adopted so far.

The EuP Directive is broad in scope, covering any product that depends on, generates, transfers or measures energy when in use (electricity, fossil fuel, or renewable energy sources). It exempts transportation vehicles for humans and goods, including cars, trains, and planes. The key focus of the EuP Directive is to reduce the energy consumption and other negative environmental impacts that occur throughout a product’s life cycle, from obtaining the raw materials to recycling at end-of-life. So far around 30 product categories have been chosen for development of so called implementing measures.

Intertek can provide a fast and cost effective compliance verification service, including measurement of energy efficiency, to show compliance for any of the products affected by the adopted implementing measures under the EuP directive.

“EuP necessitates companies to take measures in order to meet these new requirements if they are to continue selling their products into the European market”, states Dr. Ruud Overbeek, Vice President of Intertek’s Health and Environmental Services, Restricted Substances and REACH. “Intertek has designed cost-effective, simple solutions addressing these new requirements supporting our customers around the globe.”

Intertek offers consulting, testing and verification services to assist companies with compliance with the EuP Directive.
