Splitting of Geological Samples
Careful consideration is required when splitting a mineral samples to obtain representative sub-samples for analysis.
Splitting mining samples can achieve a more cost-effective option in reducing the volume of sample particle size reduction steps. Each time the sample is split, however, the potential for sampling error is introduced.
Samples that exceed the capacity of the pulverising vessels may require splitting before pulverisation. To ensure optimum representation of the crusher split, splitting is performed on a 2-3 mm crusher product. Two types of splitters are used: the Riffle Splitter, which is sometimes called a Jones Splitter, and the Rotary Splitter, or Rotary Sample Divider (RSD).
It is important to select the correct size splitter for the product being split. Correct technique is also important to ensure that samples are split without introducing bias.
