Crushing of Geological Samples
Geological samples are crushed to achieve a reduction in volume or particle size to enable splitting or pulverising procedures to be carried out.
Samples with a volume or dimension exceeding what the pulverising vessel can accommodate may require crushing and/or splitting prior to pulversing. Large samples that require splitting are crushed in order to reduce the particle size to a point that a representative sub-sample can be obtained.
Intertek routinely employs two crusher types in the mineral laboratories. These are the standard jaw crusher that produces a product of approximately 10mm, and other fine crushers, such as the Boyd® crusher, which produces a product of approximately 2-3 mm.
