Protection Concepts Most Relevant to SSL products

Flameproof (Explosion-proof) Ex d
It is assumed that the surrounding explosive atmosphere can enter the enclosure and that there will be internal explosions during the life of the equipment. The enclosure therefore has to be strong enough not to fracture or distort under the internal pressures generated. Explosion-proof products contain explosions and prevent propagation (however do not hermetically contain the explosion).

Intrinsic Safety Ex i
Low energy levels prevent incendive sparking and hotspots.

Increased Safety Ex e
The apparatus must not arc, spark, or produce ignition capable hot surfaces in normal operation.

Safety Standards for LED Products
UL 8750: LED Equipment that is an integral part of a Luminaire, including LED Drivers, LED Controllers, LED Arrays, LED Modules and LED Packages. The requirements found in UL 8750 are intended to supplement those found in existing luminaire standards.
