Smoke Detector Certification
Intertek is the only third-party lab capable of providing commercial and residential smoke detector testing and certification services in a single location to clients seeking compliance to U.S., Canadian and EU standards.
Our new, one-of-a-kind smoke detector and alarm testing facility features a state–of-the-art EU smoke and heat tunnel and an environmentally controlled smoke room. This three-in-one testing will enable manufacturers of commercial and residential detectors (alarms) to conduct concurrent certification testing to North American and European requirements. Intertek’s solution eliminates manufacturers’ current need to secure smoke detector testing through a minimum of three separate certification labs.
We are currently testing to the following residential and commercial standards:
Smoke Detector Standards in the United States
ANSI/UL 217: Single and Multiple Station Smoke Alarms (Residential)
ANSI/UL 268: Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarm Systems (Commercial)
Smoke Detector Standards in Canada
CAN/ULC-S531: Single and Multiple Station Smoke Alarms (Residential)
CAN/ULC-S529: Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarm Systems (Commercial)
Certified smoke detectors for US and/or Canada will bear Intertek's ETL Listed Mark. Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ’s) in 50 states and Canada and retailers accept the ETL Listed Mark as proof of product safety.
Smoke Detector Standards in the European Union
EN 14604: Smoke Alarm Devices
EN 54-7 Part 7: Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems (Smoke detectors or point detectors using scattered light, transmitted light or ionization)
Intertek has many years of experience helping manufacturers meet CE Marking Directive requirements and gain market access into the European Union.
