Technical Director, Energy Efficiency
Mike Stem’s career started as a system integration engineer, spending five years designing projects such as turn-key psychrometric test facilities, production line test equipment, and accelerated life test fixtures. Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and an Industrial Electronics Certification, Mike designed and managed the construction of all automated test facilities for Intertek’s Plano, Texas location. In 2009 Mike transitioned from an Intertek contractor to employee, and has since served as Project Engineer, Engineering Team Leader, Engineering Manager, and now Technical Director of Energy Efficiency.
As a Technical Director at Intertek, Mike has overseen the engineering design of the facilities, test protocols, and software sub-systems. He additionally manages the Energy Star, CEC, NRCan and SASO certification and verification test programs. Mike serves on several industry standard-writing committees and working groups, including eight ASHRAE SPCs, nine ASHRAE TCs, and one ISO WG and DOE-sponsored negotiated rule making committee.
Director of Engineering, HVAC Performance
Byron Horak joined Intertek in 1978. Through the past 36 years he has held the positions of Engineer, Engineering Team leader, Small Unitary Department Manager, Sales manager, HVAC Business Manager, General Manger, Director of Quality, Director of Program Development and currently Director of Engineering for HVAC Performance. With Intertek he has continuously been involved in the testing of HVAC equipment and the development of HVAC testing standards and programs.
Today’s responsibilities include developing and maintaining facilities and staff to stay on the cutting edge of the HVAC testing industry. Current activities include participation in four ASHRAE SPCs, three ASHRAE TCs, 5 ISO WGs, and Secretariat of IEC SC61D Subcommittee for Appliances for Air Conditioning for Household and Similar Purposes IEC Standard 60335-2-40. Additionally, Byron is Secretary of ASHRAE Standard 37, MOT for Rating Electrically Driving Unitary Air-Conditioners and Heat Pump Equipment, and participates on the AHRI Small Unitary Engineering Subcommittee to rewrite AHRI Standard 210/240, Performance Rating of Unitary Air-Conditioning & Air-Source Heat Pump Equipment.
