Workmates are usually the first to observe their colleagues’ at-risk behaviors. It is critical that they intervene. And just as importantly, it's vital that your safety culture values and reinforces interventions between crew members. Intertek's communication workshop, Safety Conversations, equips your team with the ability to communicate effectively during an intervention.
Truly mature safety cultures recognize that no matter who we are or what we do, we all are responsible for looking out for the health and safety of our workmates. This includes intervening when threats to safety arise. Unfortunately, many people are hesitant to speak up about an at-risk or safe behavior they have observed. They may be unsure whether the behavior is at-risk or they may be concerned how the other person will respond. Possibly they simply don’t know how to speak up effectively.
Intertek’s Safety Conversations Workshop provides a model for starting and guiding a conversation with others. Specifically, the workshop provides participants with:
- A practical approach for ensuring a respectful conversation occurs
- The necessary message is clearly communicated
- Knowledge of how conflict and harm to the relationship are avoided
- Skills for dealing with difficult responses
- An opportunity to practice those skills in real world situations and receive immediate coaching in a non-threatening environment
- An understanding of the receiver’s responsibilities for a successful conversation
