EPEAT, also known as Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, is an on-line procurement tool that the private and public sectors can use to evaluate, compare, and purchase electronic products (currently desktop and notebook/laptop computers and monitors) based on their environmental attributes.
Managed by the Green Electronics Council, the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool is a global registry of green electronics. The EPEAT registry is based on self-certification by manufacturers of products that meet criteria specified in the IEEE 1680 series of standards. The complete set of criteria includes 23 required criteria and 28 optional criteria in eight performance categories:
- Reduction/Elimination of Environmentally Sensitive Materials
- Materials Selection
- Design for End of Life
- Life Cycle Extension
- Energy Conservation
- End of Life Management
- Corporate Performance
- Packaging
Then, the electronic products are rated Gold, Silver of Bronze based on the percentage of the criteria requirements are met. EPEAT has a verification program to ensure accuracy. Manufacturers of EPEAT registered products must be able to provide required supporting evidence upon request at any time.
