California RoHS Services

Intertek provides end-to-end solutions for compliance with California’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulation.

The California Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulation came into effect on January 1, 2007. The purpose of this law is to limit the amount of certain hazardous heavy metals in specific electronic devices so that those metals never find their way into landfills, where they can be released into the environment. California RoHS applies to manufacturers, distributors, wholesales, and retailers who sell, or offers for sale, a covered electronic device in California. Under this law, a “covered electronic device” is defined as a video display device with a screen greater than four inches measured diagonally.

The maximum concentration values (MCV) under California's RoHS law are the same as those that apply to the European Union's RoHS Directive. For lead, mercury, and hexavalent chromium the MCV is 0.1% by weight. The MCV for cadmium is 0.01% by weight. In contrast to the EU, California does not restrict PBB and PBDE. The presence of restricted substances is measured for each homogeneous material contained within the device, not for the device as a whole.
