Cargo Scanning for Exports-Imports to Sierra Leone
Intertek, appointed by the Government of Sierra Leone to build and implement a Cargo Scanning Facility in the Port of Freetown in Sierra Leone.
In July 2004, Intertek was awarded a 10-year government contract to build and to implement a Cargo Scanning Facility in the Port of Freetown in Sierra Leone, under a Build Own Operate Transfer (BOOT) scheme. Intertek was awarded the contract because we could comprehensively meet the needs of Sierra Leone and also had a proven track record.
Since this Facility became operational, Intertek has assisted in the detection of significant quantities of contraband goods, including thousands of cigarettes, and the reduction of misdeclaration of container cargo, thereby increasing the import duty that is collected. Over time, the scanning unit has become a significant deterrent to those considering smuggling items into Sierra Leone.
