Oil Refinery Process Heater Fire
A fire occurred after a piping connection on an oil refinery’s fired heater ruptured.
A rupture of a fired heater piping connection containing a thermally stabilized silicone polymer fluid led to a fire and extensive secondary damage to other furnace components. Intertek investigated the root cause of the rupture and a suitability-for-service evaluation of the remaining furnace components.
The forensic engineering evaluation involved interviews with plant personnel, field evaluation of the critical components in the furnace, review of operation and maintenance manuals and records, detailed metallurgical testing of select components, and engineering life assessments. A technical report and expert opinions were presented to our client.
