Safety Footwear
Safety footwear sold within the European Community is subject to the Personal Protective Equipment Directive, which requires that product technical files be assessed by a notified body. Intertek is licensed by BERR (Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform) as a notified body to carry out EC Type Examinations by holding technical files for most safety footwear.
CE Mark
The CE Mark (CE is an abbreviation for ‘Conformité Europeéne,’ French for ‘European Conformity’) indicates that the footwear it is affixed to complies with all the requirements that have been imposed upon it by means of European Directive (89/686/EEC) and safety footwear standards EN ISO 20345, 20346, and 20347. The CE Mark refers to the safety rather than the quality of a product.
The CE Mark is mandatory for the footwear it applies to and indicates conformity with mandatory European safety requirements. European conformity is certified by following clear and understandable procedures, the so-called ‘conformity assessment procedures.’ Intertek can help you through the 6 Steps of the Certification process.
- Select the harmonized standard you wish your footwear to comply with
- Have the footwear tested by a competent, recognized testing house to the chosen standard
- Compile a technical file
- Complete and sign a ‘Declaration of Conformity’
- Submit your technical file for assessment to an official notified body
- Attach the CE Mark to your product according to the enforced regulations.
Intertek is an official notified body for safety footwear, protective clothing and gloves. We offer complete testing solutions and can provide expert support in compiling your ‘Declaration of Conformity.’
