BRC/IoP Global Standard

Since its inception, the Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials (BRC/IoP), developed by the BRC Trading, continues to evolve. Packaging manufacturers must not only keep abreast of updates to this innovative and evolving standard, but also adhere to their legal obligations.

The BRC/IoP Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials was developed in 2001 to protect consumers by establishing requirements and criteria for the evaluation of packaging suppliers of private label products to the UK retail market. The Standard is updated regularly, is globally recognized, and is used as a framework for the production of safe, quality packaging materials complying with legislation. Intertek has been involved in the development of the BRC/IoP Standard from the beginning and contributed to the preparation of the Standard.

We are accredited by UKAS to carry out audits against the Standard for paper, plastics and metal packaging. Intertek is also a BRC-Approved Training Establishment that offers programs such as:

  • Implementing the BRC / IoP Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials – Issue 3. This is a 2 day course.
  • Upgrading from the BRC/ IoP Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials from Issue 2 to Issue 3. This is usually a 1 day course.
