A backup depth encoder becomes a vital piece of oil and gas equipment when the primary depth measurement system on a wireline unit fails, or if there is a mains power outage.
Conventional mechanical backup depth encoders, which commonly feature flexible cable drives, can be high-maintenance and are prone to seizure. These faults have a tendency to cause drag on the measuring wheel, leading to the loss of depth accuracy.

In the event of mains power failure or a problem with the primary measurement system, the backup depth encoder continues to provide an accurate display.
The DM-series consists of two main parts, a display unit and the encoder assembly.
Unlike many conventional depth-logging systems, which use a speedo cable, the DM100 features an encoder attached to the measuring wheel, which generates a digital signal to send back to the display unit through an electric cable.
The display unit, which shows and stores the current depth of the wireline cable, is installed in the cabin of the truck and comprises an LCD display, two power indication LEDs and four switches.
