The development of a Community list of enzymes authorised for food use in the EU is mandated under Regulation (EC) No 1332/2008 of the European Parliament which came into force in January, 2009.  All new and existing food enzymes must undergo an authorisation procedure prior to inclusion on the list.  Applications to have an enzyme considered for inclusion are required to be filed by March 11, 2015.  Failure to file an application by the deadline could result in an enzyme not appearing on the first Community list of authorized food enzymes.   This regulation is relevant to all food enzymes providing a technological function in the manufacture, processing, preparation, treatment, packaging, transport, or storage of foods, including enzymes used as processing aids.

The authorisation procedure for food enzymes as laid down in the Regulation (EC) 1331/2008, is implemented by Regulation (EC) No 234/2011, which outlines the required content of a food enzyme application, including the
administrative data needed and the required data for risk assessment and risk management.   The information required to be included in the application  will vary depending on the source material, particularly if the source consists of a genetically-modified micro-organism.
