There are several initiatives to develop internationally recognized sustainability standards and certification schemes for biofuels, like the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Project (ISCC) and the Roundtable of Sustainable Biofuels (RSB). The EU Directives on Renewable Energy establish the goal of reaching a 5.75% share of sustainable biofuels in the transport sector by 2010 and 10% in every Member State by 2020.
The sustainability criteria are primarily focused on GHG savings without a negative impact on biodiversity and land use. Buyers and sellers of biofuels have the right to conduct regular independent audits of their suppliers to ensure that these sustainability criteria are met.
Intertek offers audits to verify that each player in the supply chain conforms specifically to International Standards on Biofuels Sustainability and will issue a sustainability certification inclusive of the entire supply chain.
