Release of the Final ENERGY STAR® Telephony Product V3.0 Specification

On December 20, 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the final Version 3.0 ENERGY STAR® Telephony Product Specification, expending the scope to include Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony products. The resulting revisions to the test method include the set-up of Power-over-Ethernet and a server.

Transition Timeline

Starting from May 15, 2014, certification bodies are instructed to stop certifying new product submittals to Version 2.2 requirements.

After Oct 1, 2014, all products must be certified to Telephony Product V.3.0 to bear the ENERGY STAR mark. All certifications of products to the old specifications will be invalid for purposes of ENERGY STAR® certification.

New Product Types 
The new product types for applying ENERGY STAR® V.3.0 include:

  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) device
  • Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) device
  • Corded telephone that powered with external power supply
  • Conference telephone unit

Remark: Standalone answering machine can no longer apply ENERGY STAR® V.3.0

Existing Product Types Limits
The maximum power limits for existing product types are set tightened. New limits are highlighted as below:

Sample Requirements:

For cordless phone family with different number of additional handsets, the tested model representing the family should be consisted of one cordless base unit and two additional handset units.
