Vol. 146 - Update of IEC-EN 60598-1: General Safety Requirements for Luminaires

Safety testing is very important to luminaires suppliers as unsafe luminaires may lead to electrical shocks or accidental fire. As a responsible supplier of luminaires, you should ensure that your products are safe and fully compliant with the applicable safety requirements. In January 2015, EN 60598-1: 2015 was published to supersede EN 60598-1:2008+A11:2009, which will be withdrawn in Oct. 2017. In addition, IEC standard, IEC 60598-1:2014 (Ed. 8) was published and superseded IEC 60598-1:2008 (Ed. 7) in May 2014.

Major Updates

  • IEC/EN 60598-2-6 (luminaires with built-in transformers for tungsten filament lamps) is withdrawn after the publication of new IEC/EN 60598-1; all previous requirements in IEC/EN 60598-2-6 are merged into the new edition 8.
  • IEC/EN 60598-2-21: an individual standard of rope light will be published on 30 Sep 2015 replacing IEC/EN 60598-2-20.
  • Clause 1 (Terms & Definitions): New definition: FELV (functional extra low voltage) - ELV circuit having ELV for functional purpose and not as SELV (safety extra low voltage).
  • Clause 3 (Marking) & Clause 4 (Construction):
    • Risk group classifications (RG0/RG1/RG2/RG3) are added for blue light hazard of LED light source with relevant warning on label, manual and installation guide according to IEC/TR 62778.
    • The LED light sources are classified as replaceable, non-replaceable and non-user replaceable with additional new requirements of label, manual and construction.
  • Clause 5 (Wiring for Class III luminaires and SELV circuits): Requirement update of cross sectional area of external cables.
  • Clause 11 (Creepage distance & Clearance): No creepage distance and clearance values are specified for working voltages below 25Vr.m.s.and 60Vd.c.
  • Clause 13 (Resistance to heat, fire and tracking): Requirement change for Class III products.

Retest may be considered in updating product certification to IEC 60598-1 new edition:

  • Clause 4.28: Fixing of thermal sensing controls
  • Clause 10.3: Touch current, protective conductor current and electric burn
  • Subclause 3.2.12: Marking of earth
  • Subclauses 4.32. Clause 10.2: Over voltage protective devices
