Crib Certification Program

Parents and caregivers all over the world place babies and toddlers into cribs every day, assuming that cribs present a safe and secure sleep environment.

But in recent years, the safety of cribs has been questioned as millions have been recalled due to suffocation and strangulation hazards related to deficiency in design or improper assembly.

In response to the growing scrutiny and concern around crib safety, Intertek has developed a Crib Certification program as part of our Juvenile Products Testing offerings. Intertek’s Crib Certification program not only meets all federally regulated Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards, but also addresses manufacturing variability to ensure the reliability of continuously meeting the standard through qualitative testing.

We work closely with crib manufacturers to perform stringent testing, auditing and inspection of the cribs they produce, as well as analyze their manufacturing processes with factory audits to ensure that proper practices are being followed.

Intertek’s comprehensive Crib Certification program addresses every step of the design and manufacturing process, including:

  • Design Hazard Analysis® – All potential physical and chemical hazards associated with Intertek-certified cribs are carefully identified, assessed and addressed by highly skilled experts before ever making it to market.
  • Test-to-Failure – Critical-to-safety components of each crib are identified, tested, reverse engineered and broken to collect data in order to understand and set specifications to ensure repeatable manufacturing of safe cribs.
  • Factory Audits – Every factory is evaluated on a semi-annual basis to ensure best manufacturing processes are being followed.
  • Quality Assurance – Implementation and execution of a quality assurance and safety development plan based on a system of checks and balances to ensure hazard mitigation throughout production process.
  • Government Standards Testing – All Intertek-certified cribs are rigorously tested to government standards including ASTM F1169 and Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) requirements.
  • Market Surveillance – Each crib that carries the Intertek seal in the marketplace is subject to random checks and may be re-tested at an Intertek lab to ensure constant alignment with the Intertek Crib Certification program and safety protocol.
