ISMA Testing and Certification (NFPA 285 and ASTM E2307)

Intertek is one of the only testing laboratories in North America providing testing and certification in accordance with NFPA 285 and ASTM E2307 and utilizing the Intermediate Scale, Multistory Test Apparatus (ISMA).

Our fire resistance testing facilities include vertical and horizontal full-scale, intermediate-scale, and small-scale furnaces as well as an Intermediate Scale Multistory, Test Apparatus (ISMA) allowing us to test products and assemblies of virtually any size. Our complete testing facilities enable us to test the fire resistance of assemblies ranging from walls, floor/ceiling assemblies, multistory curtain-wall assemblies, to fire doors and through-penetration firestop systems.

ASTM E 2307 - Perimeter-Joint Flammability 

This test method determines the fire resistance of the perimeter fire barrier and its ability to maintain a seal to prevent fire spread during a fire test using an ISMA test apparatus. The fire exposure conditions used in this type of testing are specified by this test method for the first 30 minutes of exposure and then conform to the Test Methods, E-119 time-temperature cure for the remainder of the test in the test room.

This test method specifies the heating conditions, methods of test, and criteria for evaluation of the ability of a perimeter fire barrier to maintain the fire resistance where a floor and exterior wall assembly are juxtaposed to a perimeter joint. These types of tests typically range from 1 to 2 hours (3 hours for some type of assemblies)

NFPA 285 - Curtain Wall 

This test provides a method of determining the flammability characteristics of exterior, non-load-bearing wall assemblies/panels. The test method is intended to evaluate the inclusion of combustible components within wall assemblies/panels of building that are required to be non-combustible construction. It is intended to simulate the tested wall assemblies’ fire performance. This type of test is a 30 minute fire test that evaluates flame spread within and on the outer surface of the wall.
