Industry Update – Plug-In Electric Vehicle Codes and Standards/Infrastructure Technology

January 05, 2012

In December, the National Electric Transportation Infrastructure Working Council (IWC) held a Plug-In Electric Vehicle Codes and Standards/Infrastructure Technology Session in Phoenix, Arizona. The IWC includes individuals from every aspect of the industry: standards bodies, manufacturers, government regulators, utilities and associations.

This group works to support the development and deployment of plug-in hybrid and electrical vehicles (PHEVS). Tim Hubbard, Regional Vice President, Global Automotive - Electric Vehicle, Intertek, attended the meeting and relayed some highlights from the meeting with us.

Automotive and utility representatives shared their perspectives on the state of utility charging programs. One large utility presented the perspective that while in the short term PEVs will not impact the utility infrastructure, in the long run, without intervention we will face power failures and more investment, while OEMs shared research that “managed” or “smart” charging could alleviate some of these problems.

Gery Kissel, the Task Force Lead for SAE J1772™ presented an update on their activities. A work group is meeting every two weeks to revise the standard to include DC Level 1 and Level 2 Fast Chargers up to 80amps charge rate. For more information about electric vehicle testing, please visit (http://www.intertek.com/energy-storage/).
